Trends in machine tools
From a study conducted by Dr. Toshimichi Moriwaki he focused on recent trends in machine technology(“Trends in Machinetools PDF.” Scribd.2006). He conducted a survey from the view points of high speed and high performance machine tools, combined multifunctional machine tools, ultra precision machine tools and advanced and intelligent control technologies. This is interesting as it shows that inn comparison to the past , machinery are more versatile creating a demand in growth and further research into making machinery more multipurpose in his place of study being Japan , this being the home of some off the largest manufacturing companies in the world . However this research falls short as it focuses on larger scale machinery such as automated lathes and multipurpose furnaces where as this project is aimed to a smaller and medium scale manufacturing services .

The project aims at designing and developing a multipurpose machine tool which is capable of performing multiple tasks simultaneously. The machine is operated by giving drive to the main shaft to which worm gear mechanism is directly attached; worm gear mechanism is used for sawing operation. On the main shaft bevel gear mechanism was used for transmitting power. These bevel gears are used to transmit motion in the radial direction and drives the drilling center. The Grinding wheel is directly connected to the motor shaft. This model facilitates to complete three operations simultaneously with a single power source.
